About the Samsung Galaxy S6

The Samsung Galaxy S6

First launched in April 2015, the Samsung Galaxy S6 is still considered one of the best Android smartphones available. Some of that praise is because the Korean smartphone giant made their flagship more like its biggest rival, the iPhone - a move which is also behind some of the biggest criticisms of the phone.

When it was released, its prime rival was the iPhone 6, and a few months later the competition got even tougher with the arrival of the iPhone 6S. The Galaxy S6 is also competing against the likes of the LG G4, the HTC One M9 and HTC 10, Sony's Xperia Z5, and another Samsung Galaxy in the form of the curvier S6 Edge, which we look at here.

Specs

Inside every Galaxy S6 is one of Samsung's own 64-bit Exynos 7420 octa-core chipsets, running a one 1.5 GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 and one 2.1 GHz Cortex-A57 quad-core processor, and 3GB of RAM. The phone launched with Android Lollipop 5.0.2 (upgradeable to 6.0.1 Marshmallow), overlaid with a fresh version of Samsung's Touchwiz user interface.

The biggest criticism made about the Galaxy S6 is that there's no micro SD card slot; the internal memory is all we get. Samsung continued to follow Apple's example by producing three versions of the S6, with different amounts of internal memory - but Samsung's smallest S6 features 32GB of internal storage rather than a measly 16GB. The 64GB version should be big enough for most - but if not, it's still possible to find the odd 128GB model.

Look and feel

The Galaxy 6 was the first Samsung handset to feel as premium as we might expect for the price. Gone is the plastic back found on the earlier Galaxy S handsets, replaced by an aluminium body coated in Gorilla Glass. The sleek design is let down slightly by the rear camera - other smartphones feature smoothed contours around the camera bump, but on the S6 the camera unit sticks out unapologetically by a couple of millimetres.

That aside, at 70.5mm x 143.4mm x 6.8mm and weighing 138g, it feels sturdy but not particularly bulky. It is bigger than 2015's iPhone 6S - but it's lighter, and it has a 5.1 inch display compared to its rival's 4.7 inch screen. The Super AMOLED display offers deep contrast and vivid colours, paired here with a quad-HD display giving around 577 pixels per inch. It's one of the sharpest screens on the market, and well suited to videos, images and gaming, with good viewing angles.

In Use

As well as offering solid 2G and 3G support, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge were among the first phones in the UK to support wi-fi calling - and, where available, calls over 4G. What's likely to be more important to most users for now is 4G data support - which is offered across a wide range of frequencies, up to LTE Cat 6 (which allows for downloads of up to 300Mb, and uploads of up to 50Mb).

Music fans with earlier Galaxy S handsets might be pleased to hear that the speaker has been moved from the back of the phone, where it was easily muffled by both hands and desks - to the bottom, which is better but still not ideal for those watching video or gaming. The sound quality has improved slightly, but given that several of the S6's flagship rivals are now supporting enhanced or hi-res audio, Samsung seem to be missing a trick.

Being a couple of millimetres slimmer than the earlier Galaxy S5, the battery in the S6 is smaller - with a capacity of 2,550mAh compared to 2,800mAh - and as the phone is made of sealed metal and glass, it's not possible to replace it when it starts to lose capacity with age. Even light users will find that the quad HD display will have a significant impact on the battery, and anyone checking their phone on a semi-regular basis may struggle to reach the end of the day. It does, however, recharge quickly - from 0% to 100% in less than 90 minutes, and up to 35% in about quarter of an hour.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy S6 features a 16 megapixel rear camera - and while higher megapixel counts can often mean great photos in good light but less impressive images under low light, the S6 has a reputation for managing both brilliantly. Quick snaps have been given a boost with a faster autofocus and the introduction of optical image stabilisation, and for those who switch off the auto mode there's a range of simple but powerful options to play with.

In terms of video, the rear camera can shoot 2160p at 30fps - but with no extra storage available, it's worth bearing in mind how much more memory 4K videos will take up. At 1080p, the S6 will film at 60fps - and for slower slo-mo, there's the option to film in 720p at 120fps.

The front camera has a 5 megapixel sensor and can shoot up to 1440p at 30fps. For those who aren't happy with how their selfies turn out, there's a beauty mode that digitally smoothes and enhances our appearance, and a wide selfie setting to fit more people into shot - which results in a photo wider and slimmer than the usual wide-angle full-screen shots from other cameras.
