Equity Unreleased
AS you know, I do love a little money news fight. Here’s one about whether you should release the equity in your home.
Which? and the rule of thumb against dodgy-seeming advertising says yes, the Safe Home Income Plans – an organisation which promotes such schemes – unsurprisingly says no.
Which? claimed that equity release is a last resort and can be expensive or even dangerous if circumstances change.
SHIP hit back, calling the claims “very outdated” and defending equity release as a way for the retired to live comfortably.
The bitter end to the fight, of course, is that soon it won’t matter; that last resort might become a first port of call.
Fake Pounds
THE amount of fake £1 coins has doubled in the past five years according to figures released this week.
The forgeries make up 2% of £1 coins - a level, a Royal Mint spokesman helpfully pointed out, at which other currencies have lost consumer confidence completely.
The spokesman also suggested that anyone who thinks that they’ve got a fake coin should hand it in to the police.
I know we’re meant to be watching the pennies but that seems a bit ridiculous.
If you are concerned about your coins check that the queen’s head is centered correctly and that the lettering is even and crisp – uneven text and a wonky queen’s head mean your coin may be a fake.
Mobile Money
SORTING out your money from your mobile came one step closer this week as Lloyds TSB announced a new service which allows customers to transfer money on their mobiles.
Lloyds join other banks in allowing account holders to see their balances and check their last six transactions via mobile but they are the first bank to offer transfer services and an alert when credit or debit cards are used overseas.
Getting more control of our money can’t be a bad thing but isn’t there a risk of that this will cause the financial equivalent of compulsive texting? Maybe that’s just me.
And Finally, if you only do one thing this week...
