Asylum seekers, political correctness: Not OK. Plagiarism: OK

ENMITY between The Daily Mail and The Guardian, always good for a laugh, sadly rarely bubbles over to the Money pages.

For anyone who didn’t peruse the weekly news roundup in Saturday’s Guardian: let me fill you in on the gossip.

Guardian reporters accused the Mail of stealing their stories, lifting their quotes and then – to add insult to injury – sticking ‘Mail Exclusive’ on them. Ouch.

A knife fight is surely just a poorly researched Mail story away.

Shake your HIPS

IF you do shake your HIPS – that’s Home Information Packs, to the uninitiated – it’s most likely to be in anger according to a YouGov poll published this week.

57% of those questioned advocated scrapping the scheme and just 5% believed that they had delivered benefits.

It’s almost a year since the £350 packs were launched despite opposition from just about everyone. Even Kirsty and Phil are against them, it’s hard to argue with that.

As the housing market continues to slide faster than an Olympic bobsleigh team there’s still no word from the government about withdrawing the scheme.

Consumer Comfort

HIPs, as well as rising energy costs and postal service complaints, are likely to be high on the agenda for new ombusman, Consumer Focus.

The campaign group will merge three existing consumer rights bodies - the National Consumer Council, Energywatch and Postwatch – and is due to begin work on the first of October.

Consumer Focus claim that their launch will mean stronger rules on how companies deal with complaints and more information and impartial advice getting out to consumers.

And Finally, if you only do one thing this week...

AND finally, if you only do one thing this financial week why not compare credit cards that could help you to rebuild a poor credit history.

We’ve all made financial mistakes in the past but nothing quite hangs around as long as a poor credit history.

Once you have committed to changing the habits that caused your credit card woes in the first place, though, and taking out a credit card could help you to get back onto the financial ladder.
