What we think

Our review and how this deal compares

Please read this first:

This review is based on general information about how the product compares in the market, it shouldn't be taken as a recommendation or advice.

Please see below for more important information relating to the content of this page.

The Tesco Clubcard credit card is a market leader in two areas - something not often achieved by many cards.

Firstly it offers the market's current longest 0% purchases deal of up to 15 months.

This deal is currently only matched (but not surpassed) by the Marks & Spencer's credit card.

Secondly, it offers reward points for one of the UK's biggest loyalty schemes - Clubcard.

0% purchases

The Tesco Clubcard credit card has been at the top of the market for a good while now for its 0% purchases offer.

The deal lasts 15 months and there aren't a huge number of terms in comparison to balance transfer offers.

The primary points here are simply the standard credit card account terms - such as always making at least the minimum payment each month and not exceeding the credit limit.

0% periods run from the day the account is opened rather than the first purchase, and unlike balance transfers there are no fees to pay to obtain the 0% rate.

We've covered in more detail what happens at the end of a 0% purchases period in this knowledgebase faq.

Clubcard points

The Tesco Clubcard credit card - as the name suggests - is tied to the Clubcard loyalty scheme.

The credit card however offers Clubcard points on all spending - even spending at ASDA for example, and additionally doubles up as a loyalty card when you're at the Tesco till.

Spending will earn 1 Clubcard point for each £4 wherever it's spent.

When shopping at Tesco, the credit card doubles up as a normal Clubcard and will in addition collect loyalty Clubcard points at the standard rate of 1 point for each £1 spent.

Clubcard credit card holders also get double points on Tesco fuel - so 1 point per £1, plus 1 point per £4 (compared to loyalty cardholders who only earn 1 point per £2 spent).

Clubcard points have a reasonable redemption value although it does differ considerably depending on the reward chosen.

For example, 250 Clubcard points is worth a £2.50 voucher to spend at Tesco.

That voucher could be exchanged for partner rewards of up to 4x the value though.

Additionally, Clubcard points can be exchanged onto the Avios travel reward scheme. We have covered this in more detail in our guide to converting Clubcard points to Avios, but currently 250 Clubcard points can be exchanged for 600 Avios.

Cardholder services

There aren't a whole lot of additional services to write home about here, and this perhaps just isn't this card's forte.

That said, cardholders would of course receive protection on purchases and against fraud as is extended under law.

Section 75 offers protection for faulty, damaged or undelivered goods as well as if the supplier goes bust.

Additionally cardholders are protected against fraud up to a maximum of £50 where reasonable precaution was taken as set out under The Lending Code.

Tesco Bank also offers an active fraud monitoring service, as well as an Internet fraud guarantee and access to the 3D secure password service for safer online shopping with participating retailers.

When travelling abroad - if the card is ever lost or stolen Tesco will aim to replace it as soon as possible and can arrange an emergency cash advance if necessary.

All in all

The Tesco Clubcard credit card stands out in a crowded market and manages to achieve what many cards can simply only pretend to: two market leading offers.
