The credit card from the Post Office is well targeted to catch those changing up their sterling over the counter with a more convenient and safer alternative for spending abroad.
It offers 0% commission on use abroad - meaning cardholders can escape the standard "2.75%" charge levied on foreign transactions.
Additionally, it offers fee-free foreign currency purchased from the Post Office before travelling (see below for more on this though).
Credit cards offer real security when travelling abroad, however more often than not, that security comes at a price.
As mentioned, purchases made on the Post Office credit card abroad won't incur additional charges for converting foreign currency to sterling.
While it's no longer possible for cardholders to "pre-load" the credit card before travelling (i.e. to hold a positive balance) - the card can still be repaid in full each month to avoid any interest charges on purchases.
Setting up a direct debit is a useful way to ensure this happens, especially if cardholders will be away when the statement is issued or for longer periods.
The Post Office credit card does waive the cash transaction fee on foreign currency purchased at a Post Office before travelling, however aside from that there are no particularly special - or cheap - offers on cash advances.
Cash advances are often a sticking point when travelling as they form an umbrella over such transactions as ATM withdrawals, foreign currency purchase and traveller's cheques among others.
Note that while the Post Office waives the cash transaction fee on foreign currency purchased over its counters - the higher interest rate and no interest free period terms still apply.
In a clear attempt to cover multiple credit card categories the Post Office credit card also offers 0% on balance transfers for 14 months (2.98% fee).
The Post Office's balance transfer deal is somewhat unique and does hold good ground in the market though.
There are actually two separate reasons for this.
Firstly, the Post Office is one of the only cards still offering "anniversary balance transfer deals" - so cardholders will receive another 0% deal for 5 months in the second and third years of card membership.
The balance transfer fee still applies and balances must be moved from separate accounts again - i.e. the deal won't apply to balances already on the card.
Secondly, the balance transfer offer can be used as a super balance transfer - so the 0% credit can be transferred to a current account as well as to repay other card balances.
In short, this means the 0% balance transfer can be used to pay off overdrafts and small loans as well as other credit cards.
The Post Office credit card does indeed seem to successfully achieve offering two very separate deals - although as they are so separate they don't work particularly well together in a cardholder's favour.
The nicest thing about this credit card? It makes sense: the offers are a good match for how we've come to use the Post Office.
