About this card

Further details and how this deal compares

Please read this first:

The following information is based on general factual research about how the product compares in the market, it shouldn't be taken as a recommendation or advice.

Nationwide is currently offering a multiple choice credit card product where new customers can choose between a purchases or a balance transfer offer.

This is the purchases choice.

0% purchases

This card offers 0% on purchases for 6 months - it's not the longest 0% purchase deal in the market by a fair stretch.

More details on the balance transfer offer can be found on the other Nationwide credit card here.

Earn use abroad

Nationwide used to be well known for offering a credit card to use abroad (Nationwide Gold).

Initially, the offer was cut down to just offering 0% in Europe and 1% was charged on purchases outside of Europe (which was the passed on charge made by Visa).

Sadly it was cut down again as part of a focus on loyalty and cardholders now have to "earn" 0% use abroad by spending in the UK.

The offer now means for each £5 spent in sterling cardholders earn the ability to spend £1 abroad without a foreign transaction fee levied.

The deal is somewhat disappointing however, especially considering there are other credit cards in the market that offer 0% on use abroad without such requirements.

Protection on fraud and purchases

The Nationwide credit card no longer offers any particularly stand out benefits on purchases - they have in the past been one of few issuers to offer extended warranties on electrical appliances for example.

Nationwide do continue to offer some additional fraud services, such as active fraud monitoring, a fraud guarantee and access to Verified by Visa (3D secure) for safer online shopping with participating websites.

These services are found on most credit cards however.

Cardholders will be protected under Section 75 and Nationwide does subscribe to The Lending Code - which offers cardholders certain rights such as maximum liabilities for fraud.

Section 75 in itself offers a very powerful level of protection against breaches of contract on newly purchased items and services, including when suppliers go out of business and become unable to fulfil an order or service provision.

The legislation holds the credit card company equally liable - so cardholders have another option for recourse when things go wrong and aren't resolvable with the supplier.

It even covers goods and services purchased abroad.

Again though this is a blanket service offered by law on any credit product provided under the Consumer Credit Act.

All in all

All in all the latest Nationwide credit card is a somewhat disappointing product from a building society that likes to advertise itself as offering more.

The credit card market currently has deals which surpass this offer on both use abroad and 0% purchases.
