About the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium

The Sony Xperia Z5 Premium

Sony Xperia Z5 Premium in gold and black

Sony Xperia Z5 Premium in gold and black. @Sony

Upon its release in November 2015, Sony's Xperia Z5 Premium became the first smartphone in the world to have a 4K (ultra HD) display - sharper than the vast majority of TVs on sale at the time. The very high resolution screen marked out the Z5 Premium as the flagship of Sony's flagships, and it certainly contributes to the rather high price tag.

As putting such a high resolution screen into a small device wouldn't make much sense, the Z5 Premium is a larger beast than the other Z5 handsets - and Sony are clearly aiming it at the same audience as those looking at the iPhone 6S Plus and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.

Specs

For all it's bigger and shinier and more impressive on the outside, the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium has most of the same kit inside as the Z5 and the Z5 Compact. A Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 processor runs an octa-core CPU made up of a quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 and a quad-core 2.0 GHz Cortex-A57, with an Adreno 510 GPU, all running off 3GB of RAM.

The Z5 Premium originally shipped with Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop), but should be upgradeable to v6.0 (Marshmallow) - although both are overlaid with Sony's rather intrusive user interface. Sony are also known for bundling rather a lot of duplicate apps on top of those provided as part of Android - both their own, such as Playstation, Xperia Lounge, and Kobo Books, and third party apps like Amazon, Dropbox and AVG. The good news is that the third party apps can be deleted, and that the 32GB internal memory can be bolstered by a microSD card of up to 200GB.

Look and feel

The headline feature here is that 4K display. Even with a 5.5 inch screen - the same size is on the iPhone 6S Plus and the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge - the 2160 x 3840 resolution means there are 806 pixels per inch, more than twice that of the 6S Plus. In real terms, that means the display is supremely sharp and vibrant - but practically speaking, and strange as it may sound, it's not full 4K. Only Sony's own image and video apps will show ultra HD video and photos at their true resolution; apps from the likes of YouTube and Netflix, will be limited to standard HD - 1080p.

Sony's handsets have a very particular, squared off look. With the possible exception of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, once a phone has a 5.5 inch screen it's going to look and feel big - and the blocky design of the Z5 Premium adds to that impression. It measures 75.8mm x 154.4mm x 7.8mm, and weighs 180g - considerably smaller, and 12g lighter, than the iPhone 6S Plus, but it gives the suggestion of being bulkier.

The two smaller versions of the Xperia Z5 feature frosted glass and metal rear and sides, marking a change from the glossy finish of earlier Xperia handsets - but for some reason the Z5 Premium has missed out. Whether we like shiny or frosted surfaces is a matter of personal taste, but practically speaking the mirror-like rear and the polished aluminium sides make the phone feel a little slippery in the hand; combined with its size and shape, some may be put off completely in favour of a smaller or more rounded rival.

In use

Like its stablemates, the Z5 Premium has IP68 certification, meaning it should be waterproof to 1.5 metres, for up to half an hour - and unlike earlier Xperia handsets, that's been achieved by sealing most of the ports rather than covering them with rubber flaps that had a tendency to break off. The only surviving flap here covers the slot for the SIM and micro SD cards, so it shouldn't need fiddling with too often.

The larger than usual body allows for a larger battery, with a capacity of 3430mAh - but it has to deal with a far more power hungry display than any other battery. When the display isn't required, the battery will do quite well - so standby time is decent (if not the up to two days that Sony rather optimistically claim), and those who mainly use their phones to listen to audio (from the FM radio through to hi-res) during the day should find they'll make it through comfortably.

As we'd expect from a top of the range handset, connectivity is provided across a wide range of 4G frequencies, using LTE Cat 6 which allows downloads at up to 300Mb, and uploads at up to 50Mb. Dual band wi-fi is supported up to the 802.11ac standards, and sharing between devices is possible via Bluetooth 4.1.

Camera

On the smaller Z5 handsets, the rear camera is the feature that grabs all the headlines, with its 23MP sensor. The same sensor is found on the Z5 Premium - and it too will take photos at a resolution of 8MP until we go into the settings and adjust the resolution upwards; similarly video will record in full HD rather than 4K until we adjust the settings. But here's where that 4K display comes into its own, as snaps and videos will be shown in all their extremely detailed glory.

What may frustrate some is that while other smartphone manufacturers are adding optical image stabilisation to their flagship handsets, Sony are sticking with digital stabilisation - and only when shooting video. Taking photos of moving objects is reportedly a little hit and miss - but getting several shots in quick succession, or pulling the phone out of a pocket to grab a blink and you'll miss it shot, are made possible by the very fast auto focus and separate camera button on the side of the handset.

Somewhat disappointingly, given the power behind the rear camera, the front facing camera is merely comparable with those found in the Xperia Z5's rivals - with a 5.1MP sensor that takes decent but not outstanding selfies.
