About the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact

The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact

Like Apple and Samsung, Sony like to offer various versions of their flagship handsets, to appeal to as many people as possible, and as the name suggests, the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact is a slightly smaller, slightly cheaper, version of the Xperia Z5. Size aside, most of their specifications are similar - but there have been some concessions made because of the smaller body.

The range of Sony Xperia Z5 Compacts. @Sony

While it's a similar size to the iPhone 6S, the fact that it's Sony's "small" flagship inevitably means it faces competition from the iPhone SE as well. The high end specs - and price - leave behind other "compact" phones like the Samsung Galaxy A3: this is a flagship in all but size.

Specs

The Sony Xperia Z5 uses the same processor as its bigger siblings - a Snapdragon 810 with a CPU made up of a quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 and quad-core 2.0 GHz Cortex-A57, and the same Adreno 430 GPU - but here they run off 2GB of RAM, with 32GB of internal memory. The phone launched with Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop), which Sony have confirmed will be upgraded to Android Marshmallow (v6). That's overlaid with Sony's user interface.

While other Android smartphone manufacturers are starting to remove some of the duplicate apps from their newer devices, Sony have added more - although as they've included third party apps like Amazon and Dropbox, there's a better chance that we'll actually use some of them. The good news is that it's possible to uninstall many of them, rather than being limited to disabling them - and there's always the option to boost the on board memory with a micro SD card of up to 200GB.

Look and feel

For all it's a supposed to be a small phone, the Xperia Z5 Compact is about same size as the iPhone 6S - and noticeably larger than the iPhone 5S and SE. Measuring 65.0mm x 127.0mm x 8.9mm and weighing 138g, it's a couple of centimetres shorter than the standard Xperia Z5 and almost 20g lighter - but it's thicker, to create more space for the hardware and battery. The blocky design of the Sony Xperia handsets can make the bigger models look and feel a little awkward, but as well as being smaller, the Z5 Compact features more rounded edges and corners, making it more comfortable to hold.

The handset features a 4.6 inch 720p screen offering around 323ppi, which seems a little odd when similarly sized, cheaper, phones have HD displays. The top and bottom bezels are proportionally slimmer than those on the Z5, with no negative impact on the performance of the front camera, two front facing speakers or the microphone. The power button / fingerprint sensor sits in the centre of the right hand edge, with the volume rocker a little below it - which is less awkward here than on the larger Z5 - and the camera button sits a little below.

In Use

The Xperia Z5 Compact's thicker body helps make room for a 2,700mAh battery - smaller than the 2,900mAh pack in the Z5, but bigger than you'll find in the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, which have bigger - but thinner - bodies. With moderate use, most people should find they can get a good day and a half out of the handset. Stamina Mode can squeeze a few more hours out of the battery without being too intrusive, by disabling apps when the phone is asleep - but Ultra Stamina is basically for emergency use only.

The Z5 Compact can play audio encoded at 24-bit (high definition) - a feature best experienced through headphones; the front facing speakers are better than those found on a lot of mobile phones, but not as good as those found on recent HTC handsets, for example. The audio quality during calls is very clear, however, with an effective noise cancelling microphone cutting out the background noise without affecting chatter. Voice calls can be made over 4G where supported, while data connections are more than covered by 802.11ac wi-fi, 3G, and a wide range of 4G frequencies at home and abroad.

Camera

The Xperia Z5 Compact has the same feature packed cameras, front and back, as the bigger Z5. That means it can shoot images at up to 23 megapixels - although it's set to 8MP by default - and film in up to 4K. It's worth remembering that 4K videos will eat up storage, and that the 720p display won't do justice to them when played back - and that, according to reviews, filming in 4K for long periods causes the handset to get rather hot.

And while more flagship phones are starting to feature optical image stabilisation, Sony rely on their SteadyShot Intelligent Active Mode software to help combat any slight shakiness, and it's only available in video mode. The "hybrid" autofocus is incredibly fast, however, and among the numerous effects and modes is Sony's version of the "live photo" - in which the phone captures 10 seconds of audio and one second of video.

The 5.1 megapixel front camera on the Z5 Compact marks a considerable upgrade on the 2.1 MP sensor on the earlier Z3 Compact - and here the extra pixels do make a positive difference to the quality of the images the camera can take. As well as featuring reasonable HDR, it can record video in full HD - and there's a wide angle lens setting for group selfies.
