About the Sony Xperia X

The Sony Xperia X

sony xperia x

Sony Xperia X. @Sony

The Sony Xperia X isn't quite sure what it wants to be. The front and back cameras, some new battery technology, and some tweaks to the design - and the price and the way it's being marketed - suggest it's a flagship device, but its processor - and the effect that has on its performance at times - mark it out as being mid-range.

For the price, we'd be forgiven for expecting something that can compete at every level with the likes of the LG G5, the HTC 10, and the Huawei P9 - and it can't. But Sony appear to be banking on the Xperia X's cameras, improved interface, and a new and potentially much longer lasting battery, the combined impact of which are more difficult to quantify.

Specs

As it's not strictly a flagship handset, the Sony Xperia X features a newer but less impressive chipset than the earlier Xperia Z5 phones. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 processor with its six-core CPU (made up of a quad-core 1.4GHz Cortex-A53 and a dual-core 1.8GHz Cortex-A72) and Adreno 510 GPU are usually found on mid-range devices. The good news is that they have the same 3GB of RAM as Sony's higher spec phones, which helps keep things running smoothly for the most part.

The Xperia X comes with Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 from the off - no waiting for an update to be made available. The user interface is much cleaner than on previous Sony handsets - but open the app tray and the company have bundled as many duplicate and third party apps as ever. Fortunately, as well as the 32GB of internal storage, there's space for a microSD card of up to 200GB.

Another sign of the Xperia X's confused heritage - is it a flagship or not? - is its lack of IP68 certification. The earlier Z5 handsets were all officially dustproof and water resistant, even if Sony cautioned owners against testing that for themselves. It may be that they've chosen to extend that caution with the Xperia X by not going for certification - but being rainproof was a popular feature.

Look and feel

Every Sony Xperia handset has had the same angular design - but the Xperia X tinkers with it slightly. The front curves gently into more rounded plastic edges; the back, which on other Xperia phones has also been made of glass, is now brushed aluminium. They're subtle changes, but they knock the edges off the design, both visually and physically - there have been no complaints about this phone feeling sharp in the hand.

Measuring 69.4mm x 142.7mm x 7.9 mm, the Xperia X is a few millimetres shorter and narrower than the Z5, but a little bit thicker. The full HD (1,080 x 1,920) five inch display offers a fairly impressive 441 pixels per inch - and because this is a Sony device, the LCD display features Sony Bravia and Triluminous technology, which give greater depth and vibrancy without overdoing the colours.

In use

Sony claim that it's possible to get up to two days' use out of their Xperia handsets before they need charging. Take that with a pinch of salt - but almost everyone should find that the 2,620mAh battery will comfortably last them a full day, and light users may find the phone lasts well into a second. Expect to get up to 19 hours of 3G talk time, 9.5 hours of web browsing, or up to 10 hours streaming HD video.

Furthermore, the battery itself should have a longer lifespan: the Xperia X is the first smartphone to feature a Qnovo battery, which supposedly maintains its capacity for twice as long as standard lithium batteries. That's a key selling point when it comes to sealed handsets, where they can't be replaced.

But here's where the lower specs may have an impact. The Xperia X is more than capable of dealing with what we might consider everyday use - messaging, checking and updating social media, use as a phone, and playing audio and video. But the mid-range processor will start to show signs of strain if users want to play graphics-heavy games, multitask with several apps, or edit photos taken in the RAW format.

Camera

The Xperia X's rear camera features the same 23MP sensor as the Xperia Z5 series, and the same embarrassment of modes - but it has a fresh trick up its sleeve in the form of Predictive Hybrid Autofocus. The idea is that the feature will enable us to take better shots of moving objects: tap the object in question on the screen, and the camera will predict where it's heading, track it and keep the focus sharp until we hit the shutter button.

Given that the rest of the phone's specs are decidedly mid-range, it's one of the features that helps justify the flagship price tag. But while plenty of other phones - including cheaper models - are starting to support 4K filming, the Xperia X doesn't: users must be content with shooting 1080p video at either 30 or 60 frames per second. Note also that, as with Sony's previous 23MP cameras, to get the full resolution requires going into the camera's settings, as it's set to 8MP by default.

The front camera is another point of justification for the high-end price tag: the 1/3 inch 13MP sensor is better, specification wise, than that in the iPhone 6S's main camera. It also boasts pretty much all the same features as the rear camera, with the exception of ISO control when shooting in manual mode. In good light, it's possibly the best selfie camera out there.
