About the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

samsung galaxy s7 edge vs galaxy s7

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge vs Samsung Galaxy S7. @Samsung.

When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge was released in February 2016, it was hard not to see it as a direct challenge to the iPhone 6S Plus - but for Samsung stalwarts it also marked the return of some popular and useful features that had been removed from the previous year's flagship model, the S6 Edge.

Specs

While not one of the first features we might look for in a smartphone, Samsung have made both the S7 (reviewed here) and the S7 Edge water- and dust-resistant, meeting IP68 specifications. This means that should either handset go for a dip, they'll theoretically be fine in up to 1.5 metres of water for up to 30 minutes. The feature had mixed feedback in previous Galaxy S models - which may have been why it was missing from the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge - but its return has been welcomed.

The S7 Edge comes with Android Marshmallow (6.0), overlaid with Samsung's Touchwiz user interface. The UK version of the phone uses Samsung's own octa-core Exynos 8890 chip (featuring two quad-core processors, of 2.3GHz and 1.6GHz) and 4GB of RAM. In terms of memory, there are two options, 32GB or 64GB - and Samsung seem to have learned from the mistake they made with the S6 phones, because it's once more possible to boost this with a microSD card, of up to 200GB.

Look and feel

One criticism levelled at almost every Samsung Galaxy phone is that they're smear magnets - and the Galaxy S7 Edge is just as much of a fingerprint trap as previous models. We'd expect the screen to pick up prints, but because the phone is covered in Gorilla Glass - layered over a thin metal skin on the back - every touch will leave its mark. They're most obvious on the black version; the consensus seems to be that they're far less noticeable on the gold version.

Both the S7 and the S7 Edge have quad-HD resolutions of 2,560 x 1,440, but because the S7 Edge has a wider screen, it has 534 pixels per inch, compared with the smaller phone's 577ppi; only the most finicky of users will spot much, if any, difference in sharpness. The AMOLED technology used in the display, meanwhile, means that at launch the phone offered the highest maximum brightness, lowest reflectance and best performance in bright ambient light on the market, meaning it should cope well in sunny conditions.

The S7 Edge is a big phone, but it feels remarkably neat. Its exact dimensions are 72.6 mm x 150.9 mm x 7.7 mm - about 1 cm shorter and 0.5 cm narrower than the iPhone 6S Plus, and actually thicker from the side than the Apple phablet - but front and back, the sides of the phone curve around gently, giving a more elegant look and feel. The dual edge screen helps, allowing for a phablet-sized display without making the phone any chunkier.

In Use

Those dual edges are functional too, allowing users to access a variety of menus - including the People Edge, which shows our favourite contacts, as well as one that can be loaded with apps, and another with shortcuts to key tasks. The edges also light up when the phone rings - if the call is coming from a contact on the People Edge, it'll use the colour assigned to them; otherwise it'll glow green.

As we'd expect, the Galaxy S7 Edge is 4G-capable and then some, supporting LTE Cat 9 (which allows for download speeds of up to 450Mb and uploads of up to 50Mb) over about 20 different LTE bands - so moving from network to network and country to country won't be a problem. It's compatible with the fastest currently available wi-fi protocol, 802.11ac, and also offers Bluetooth 4.2 LE with aptX.

The non-removable battery inside the S7 Edge has a capacity of 3,600mAh, which Samsung say is enough to cope with screening up to 13 hours of HD video, and some reviews suggest that someone putting their phone through a reasonable amount of mixed use can expect to get between 18 and 24 hours out of a single full charge - which, Samsung say will take just under two hours.

Camera

The main camera on the Galaxy S7 Edge has fewer megapixels than that on the S6 Edge - but as Apple have proven for many years, fewer megapixels can often mean better photos. Here the drop from 16MP to 12MP is accompanied by "dual pixel" technology - which allows for the same kind of lightning fast accurate autofocus we'd usually expect on a DSLR camera.

The flash is a dual LED - but not dual tone, like some smartphones offer - and there's optical image stabilisation for video and lower light situations. Video can be shot in 4K at 30 frames per second, or in slow motion (240 frames per second) at 720p - and it's possible to grab stills at 9MP when simultaneously filming in 4K.

The front camera, meanwhile, uses a 5MP sensor and adds a "wide angle" setting to the available modes - which, for those with a steady hand allows us to pan the shot through 120 degrees for a little more scene setting, or simply more people. Like the front camera on the iPhone 6S handsets, the screen brightens considerably in place of a dedicated flash - although some reviews suggest that it's actually rather too bright for use at arm's length.
