About the LG G5

The LG G5

lg g5

LG G5. @LG

When it was revealed at 2016's Mobile World Congress, the LG G5's modular design could be said to have stolen the show. As well as extending the life of the phone by letting us get at and replace the battery, the talk of the extra, specialised, units we'd be able to add sparked the imagination. But while the G5's "Friends" are an interesting development, and the external redesign makes it look like LG decided on making a completely fresh start, the improvements inside are much more evolutionary than revolutionary.

Whether the separate modules take off or not, it's the under the hood developments that make the G5 well enough equipped to take on the likes of the HTC 10, the Samsung Galaxy S7, and the Sony Xperia Z5 and X.

Specs

As with many of 2016's other flagship handsets, the processing power of the LG G5 is provided by a Snapdragon 820 chipset; the CPU is made up of a dual-core 2.15 GHz Kryo and a dual-core 1.6 GHz Kryo. The phone runs Android 6.0.1 (Marshmallow), overlaid with LG's Optimus UX 5.0 interface - slimmed down a little compared to previous versions, but still loaded with LG's own versions of various apps - with 4GB of RAM available on top of the 32GB of internal memory.

If 32GB isn't enough memory, the phone can support microSD cards of up to 200GB - although it doesn't support Adoptable Storage, which allows users to combine external memory with that inside the phone without affecting performance. On the plus side, however, because of the phone's modular design, the battery is not only accessible but removable - and therefore replaceable should it start to lose charge as it ages.

Look and feel

The headline feature of the LG G5 is the fact that it's modular. The bottom part of the phone is removable and can be switched with one of a number of other modules. At the time of the phone's launch there were just two - a combined camera and battery grip, and a Bang & Olufsen audio unit. The G5 is also LG's first all metal phone, though the aluminium body is disguised by a variety of coloured paint finishes.

There were two defining features on LG's previous flagship handsets - very curved bodies, and power and volume buttons on the back, rather than the sides, of the phones. The modular design of the G5 has seen the curves all but vanish, and only the power button (combined with the fingerprint sensor) remains on the back of the phone. Both the power button and the (bigger than before) camera unit protrude somewhat from the back of the phone - they're smoothly contoured, but the phone can't lie flat on its back.

With the original bottom module in place, the G5 measures 73.9mm x 149.4mm x 7.7mm (ignoring the rear power button and camera), and it boasts a 5.3 inch quad HD display offering 554 pixels per inch. Its biggest Android rival is also its smallest: the Samsung Galaxy S7 is a couple of millimetres narrower and half a centimetre shorter but can still boast a 5.1 inch screen; the iPhone 6S is smaller still but has just a 4.7 inch display.

In Use

Like the Samsung Galaxy S7, the LG G5 has an always-on feature that allows users to see key information even when their phone is in sleep mode. When activated, the G5 will show the clock and notifications from any apps we choose - so WhatsApp, Snapchat and Gmail users will be able to see at a glance if they've been pinged. But as the G5 has an LCD display, the whole screen is essentially on permanently - so to keep the power drain to a minimum, the notification area is quite dim.

Even with the always-on screen, LG say the 2,800mAh battery should give up to 20 hours of 3G talk time, and last almost 17 days if left in standby. Real life tests suggest that most average users should get to the end of the day with about 10% battery left - although anyone who likes streaming music (either an up to 24-bit stream or via the FM radio) or gaming during the day may want to take their charger with them. On that note - the G5 has a USB C (reversible) port, so it's likely that the cable that comes with the phone will be the only one suitable for the job.

In terms of connectivity, all the usual 2G, 3G, and wi-fi protocols are covered, and the phone supports Bluetooth v4.2 LE. The European version of the phone supports a broad sweep of 4G frequencies, at either LTE Cat 6 (downloads of up to 300Mb) or Cat 9 (downloads up to 450Mb), so travelling shouldn't be a problem.

Camera

While many smartphone manufacturers attempt to get the rear camera to lie flush with the rest of the body, LG have gone for a thinner handset where they can, then let the camera stick out as much as it needs - and it's a large camera unit. There's just one LED flash, but there's a lens on either side of it. The main lens uses a 16 megapixel sensor combined with a fairly standard f/1.8 aperture; the second lens has an 8 megapixel sensor but is wide-angle - at 135 degrees, wider than the human field of vision. Both benefit from laser autofocus and three-axis optical image stabilisation.

The front camera also features an 8 megapixel sensor, and has a slightly bigger aperture - making it better suited for selfies in lower light conditions. It can also record 1,080p (HD) video at 30fps. It does, however, present us with a flipped around image - as if we're looking in a mirror.
