About the LG G4

The LG G4

lg g4 in brown leather

LG G4 in brown leather. @LG

LG's 2015 flagship handset, the G4, was - and still is - notable for its slightly curved shape, the fact that there was a leather backed version, and fitting an impressive 5.5 inch quad-HD display into a relatively small body. With a screen that size, the phone was an obvious challenger to the likes of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the Galaxy Edge S6 (and now the S7), and the HTC One M9.

While the G4 built on the developments seen in the previous year's G3 handset, 2016's G5 moved in a very different direction (more of which here), so we can think of the G4 as being the last, and presumably best, in its particular line.

Specs

The G4 runs off a Snapdragon 808 processor with a six-core CPU made up of a quad-core 1.44 GHz Cortex-A53 and a dual core 1.82 GHz Cortex-A57. It uses ARM's big.LITTLE architecture, which allows the dual core processor to take on power intensive tasks such as gaming or running multiple apps, while the more efficient quad-core processor gets on with the basic everyday tasks - improving performance and saving battery power.

The phone comes with Android Lollipop (5.1.1), overlaid with LG's Optimus UX 4.0 user interface. Optimus UX is less intrusive than on previous LG handsets, while doing its best to be helpful: Smart Notice offers timely hints on using the phone to its best - reminding us about battery intensive apps, for example - while Smart Settings customises how the phone acts when we're at home or out - wi-fi and Bluetooth on or off, for example - and what to do when we plug in headphones.

In terms of memory, there's 3GB of RAM, and the 32GB of internal memory can be boosted with a microSD card of up to 256GB.

Look and feel

By 2015, many top end handsets were made with metal bodies - but the LG G4 is still very plasticky. While the leather version looks good, reviews suggest that it doesn't feel all that "premium". It does, however, make the most of one of the defining features of the LG G handsets: from the G2 onwards, the power and volume buttons have been on the rear, below the camera. It seems odd at first, but they're in an ideal position for operating with an index finger whichever hand we use to hold the phone.

The G4 should fit comfortably in most hands, measuring 76.1 mm x 148.9 mm x 9.8 mm. That final measurement may seem chunky, but that's at the very thickest part of the phone - at its thinnest it's just 6.3 mm. And it has a 5.5 inch display. With the exception of the Samsung Galaxy Edge S7, other phones with similarly sized screens are pretty hefty: the 5.5 inch iPhone 6 Plus, for example, measures 77.8mm x 158.1mm; the 5.7 inch Samsung Galaxy Note 4 phablet is 78.6mm x 153.5mm - and the 5.2 inch Sony Xperia Z3 measures 72.0mm x 146.0mm.

The display itself is quad-HD (2,560 x 1,440, at 538 pixels per inch), with the kind of contrast and richness of colour we'd normally only expect from a Samsung super AMOLED screen - which means some may find it a little oversaturated, particularly when the brightness is up high.

In Use

The LG G4 supports the usual array of 2G and 3G bands, it can handle 4G voice calls where available, and as far as data connectivity goes, it meets LTE Cat 6, which allows for downloads of up to 300Mb and uploads at 50Mb. The European version of the phone supports the greatest range of 4G frequencies, so roaming shouldn't be a problem.

Dual band wi-fi covers all the main protocols, and the phone can be used as a wi-fi hotspot if the network allows it. Sharing is also possible via Bluetooth v4.1, and the micro USB port supports Slimport 4K - which means we can connect the phone to a TV or monitor to play up to 4K HD video on a bigger screen. Like the G3 and G2 before it, the LG G4 supports hi-res (or "Hi-Fi") audio - up to 24-bit. Only a handful of smartphone manufacturers do this, including Sony and HTC, and there's not that much hi-res music out there - but it's a nice touch, as is the inclusion of a stereo FM radio.

The LG G4 has a 3,000mAh battery - bigger than that found in many of its immediate rivals - but it doesn't seem to last as long as we might expect. A similarly sized battery on the HTC 10 will last more than a day with average use, and the iPhone 6 Plus and 6S Plus can both last well into a second day. By comparison, the LG G4 will end one day of light mixed use with about 15% charge. The good news is that because the battery is removable, it'll be much simpler and cheaper to replace when it starts to lose charge with age.

Camera

The LG G4's rear camera looks pretty good on paper: a 16 megapixel sensor, three-axis optical image stabilisation, the ability to shoot in the RAW format, and a host of simple to use manual control options. It's not all talk, either: reviewers say its performance in the Auto and Simple modes is about level with that of the iPhone 6 and the Samsung Galaxy S6 - widely accepted as the best smartphone cameras of 2015.

When the phone was first released, the rear camera could record in both HD and quad-HD at 30fps, with stereo sound. It's since has some software updates that also allow it to film in slo-mo, with 120fps at 720p.

The front camera, meanwhile, has an 8MP sensor - the same as the rear camera on the iPhone 6. But megapixel count isn't everything, and the image quality is about the same as we'd get from the 5MP selfie camera on the Samsung Galaxy S6 - which isn't bad. It can also shoot HD video at 30fps, and for those fond of throwing poses it has gesture control, in which it'll start a three second timer upon seeing someone open then close their fist in shot.
