About the Apple iPhone 6s

The Apple iPhone 6S

apple iphone 6s colour range

Apple iPhone 6S range. @Apple Inc.

The iPhone 6S is Apple's flagship handset of 2016, with an upfront price that reflects its status. In the great Apple versus Android battle, the biggest threat to the iPhone 6S at launch was the Samsung Galaxy S6 - since replaced by the subtly improved Galaxy S7 handsets - and the likes of the Sony Xperia and the LG G3 and G4 phones.

Launched at the same time as its bigger sibling, the iPhone 6S Plus, here we focus solely on the smaller, cheaper, version, the iPhone 6S. For more on the 6S Plus, click here.

Specs

The iPhone 6S comes with iOS 9, running on an A9 chipset and dual-core 1.84Ghz Twister processor. This is possibly the biggest difference between the 6S and 2014's iPhone 6, which had an A8 chipset and iOS 8. Most older iPhones will have been able to upgrade to the newer OS, but without one of these newer chips on board their performance may be rather sluggish. As the A9 chip was designed specifically with iOS 9 in mind, it runs as smoothly and seamlessly as we'd hope.

A common complaint with Apple devices is that it's not possible to add extra memory with a micro SD card - so those who want to make the most of iOS 9 may want to consider the 64GB or 128GB version; 16GB will fill up very quickly.

Apple say the battery should be good for 14 hours of talk time and up to 240 hours (10 days) in standby - and while older models had something of a reputation for unpredictable battery life, the iPhone 6S seems to be much more reliable; reviews suggest it can last a full day of average use between charges.

Look and feel

The exact dimensions of the iPhone 6S are 67.1mm x 138.3mm x 7.1mm - about 5.5 inches high and just over 2.5 inches wide, and very slim from the side - and it weighs 143 grams. Measured diagonally, the screen is 4.7 inches, with a resolution of 326 pixels per inch.

Compared to previous iPhones, it's a little bigger and flatter, but that means the screen feels much bigger. The iPhone 5, for example, was about 1cm narrower and 1.5cm shorter but 5 mm thicker - and had a four inch screen, which in smartphone terms is very small.

Even so, the iPhone 6 still feels quite compact compared to its rivals. The Samsung Galaxy S6, for example, measures 70.5 mm x 143.4mm x 6.8 mm, while the S7 is 69.6 mm x 142.4 mm x 8mm - and both have a 5.1 inch screen, coupled with a resolution of 577ppi. The Sony Xperia Z5, released at the same time as the iPhone 6S but of a similar size to the Galaxies, has a screen measuring 5 inches diagonally.

But where the iPhone, and other Apple devices, consistently score points over the competition is in their build quality. The iPhone 6S has improved on the metal unibody and more rounded edges and corners introduced with the iPhone 6 by using a slightly stronger aluminium alloy. The all metal body made the iPhone that bit sleeker as well as harder wearing - but the earlier version was reportedly prone to bending.

In use

As could be expected, the iPhone 6S offers mobile connectivity ranging from quad-band 2G through to 4G LTE capability; it also supports Bluetooth v4.2 and all the current wi-fi protocols, as well as being able to act as a wi-fi hotspot when paired with a data deal that supports tethering. Alongside SMS and MMS, the iPhone's Message app supports instant messaging via iMessage; video calls are also possible via the front facing camera.

Camera

Apple had been criticised for sticking with an 8MP sensor for the main camera on their previous iPhones - although pictures taken with an iPhone's 8MP camera often matched those taken by phone cameras with twice the megapixels, and sometimes beat them - focusing quickly and offering colours that were truer to life in a range of conditions.

With the iPhone 6S, however, they've finally increased the number of megapixels in both cameras, boosting the sensor for the main camera to 12MP, although the only real difference most will notice is the dramatically better performance in very low light conditions. That said, the extra megapixels mean it can record in 4K as well as supporting Live Photos - taking an image half a second before and after the main photo to capture a moment rather than a still.

The front camera has also been improved, from 1MP to 5MP, and when the front camera is selected, the phone's display will be boosted to three times its usual brightness to provide better lighting. The improved sensor means it can also shoot better videos in selfie mode, with a resolution of 720p.
