Finding a home phone with broadband deal

Why take both from one provider?

Let's face it, most of us looking for a cheap broadband deal are actually looking for a cheap home phone and broadband deal, because it's almost impossible to get online without also taking a provider's landline service. Fortunately, introductory offers and competition between the providers mean there are plenty of cheap home phone and broadband deals available, including some where the broadband part is free.

What do I need to know about speed and data?

People who aren't sure how much they'll use the internet, or what they're going to use it for, might want to start by looking for a good basic standard broadband (up to 17Mb) deal. Many of these include unlimited data, which is reassuring for those getting to grips with everything the internet has to offer.

People who know they're going to need a faster connection - because they play games online or they want to have several devices connected at once - may want to consider a fibre broadband deal. Entry level fibre offers speeds of up to 38Mb. People who'd like to go online, do what they need to quickly, then leave the computer alone, can benefit from the speed of fibre but still keep costs down by looking into a capped data deal.

How much will calls cost?

If making calls using the landline is important, check how they're charged. Outside any inclusive periods, some phone companies charge a flat rate for calls whatever time of day or week they're made. Others charge more for evening calls than those made at the weekend, and more still for those made in weekday daytime hours. When looking at home phone and broadband deals that charge similar amounts for line rental, take a look at their call rates to see which is likely to work out cheaper in use.

Phoning numbers starting 08, and to 09 and 118 numbers can cost more than other calls, because they're made up of two parts, each charged per minute. Home phone providers are responsible for setting the "access charge"; the "service charge" is set by the company operating the number. If a home phone deal doesn't include 0845 and 0870 numbers in its calling plans, this can have quite an impact on how much we end up paying each month.

What's the best deal for someone who makes international calls?

Many home phone with broadband deals offer some sort of international call package, ranging from discounts on the usual cost of calling another country, to unlimited free calls to their most popular destinations. The countries included do vary from provider to provider, so anyone with a particular destination in mind should check if it's included before signing up.

If the right countries aren't included in a provider's popular destinations, that doesn't have to mean missing out on an otherwise good home phone and broadband package. A benefit of also taking broadband is that it gives us access to internet phone services, where we use the data connection to talk to each other instead of the phone line. And if that's not an option - because the people we're calling don't have access to the same service, for example - consider using an override service before dialling out using the landline.
