Virgin Media

Virgin Media were the first broadband provider to offer customers broadband without a phone line, and for those who live in a Virgin Media enabled area they currently offer some of the cheapest broadband-only plans.

Here are their latest broadband-only prices:

At the time of writing, broadband only plans from Virgin Media range from £7.50 cheaper per month, to as much as £19 cheaper - with the biggest savings on the faster packages.

However, Volt plans also come with a digital phone line and free UK weekend calls and these bundles are often cheaper than the broadband and phone equivalent packages without Volt. So, Volt is where to look if a home phone line is a necessity.

Virgin Media is available to over 16 million premises across the UK, with the fastest broadband speed of 1.13Gbps. They also have ambitious rollout targets, aiming to reach a further 7 million premises - 23 million in total - by the end of 2026.

Full fibre broadband without a phone line

Full fibre broadband has now reached over 50% of the UK, or 14.5 million homes, and is provided by either Openreach or a range of independent broadband networks.

Openreach's network has now passed over 11 million premises, and they have ambitious rollout targets to reach 25 million premises by the end of 2026.

Full fibre broadband works by installing a fibre optic cable directly into a customer's home, entirely bypassing the existing phone line network.

As a result, most full fibre broadband packages come without a landline, and where a phone line is included it will be a digital line provided over the broadband connection.

What this also means, is that rather than customers being able to save money by going without a home phone line, it's more that they would now have to pay more to get one.

It's also worth noting a few full fibre broadband providers don't offer the option to add a home phone at all, which includes TalkTalk, Plusnet, Shell Energy Broadband, and Gigaclear. Whereas customers who sign up to BT can still take a phone line if they're happy to pay extra for it.

Independent full fibre providers

Smaller full fibre networks including Hyperoptic, Community Fibre, and Gigaclear generally focus on a specific area, with Gigaclear targeting underserved rural areas, and Community Fibre operating solely in London.

All of these providers give customers the option of cheaper broadband without a home phone line, with Hyperoptic deals around £2 cheaper each month, and Community Fibre £10 cheaper.

Part-fibre broadband without a landline

While around 75% of UK homes can now access either a full fibre broadband provider or Virgin Media, there is still 25% who can't.

For those the gigabit rollout hasn't yet reached, broadband without a phone line is still available, but from fewer providers, as the technology still relies on the phone network.

Superfast broadband is available to 97% of the UK, and uses fibre to the cabinet connections, with the last mile of cabling to a customer's home being the existing copper telephone network.

Until recently, superfast broadband packages always came with a home phone line, yet due to the upcoming closure of the copper phone line network, providers are already moving customers onto phone line free connections, although usually with the option to add a home phone line if they want it.

BT

BT is the largest and most well-known broadband provider in the UK, and they offer broadband without a phone line across both superfast and full fibre packages.

Because BT is in charge of closing the copper phone line network, it's no surprise all of their broadband plans for new customers have already ditched the phone line, with only the option of a digital line.

Broadband-only plans cost £5 less than taking a digital line with BT. Here is the latest pricing of their superfast plans available to 97% of the UK:

Where the Openreach full fibre network is available to a particular property however, they'll be connected to full fibre regardless of the download speed they choose.

One thing that's worth bearing in mind when it comes to BT is their prices tend to be on the higher side, and people may find it cheaper to get a broadband and phone deal from another provider, than go phone line free with BT, despite the £5 monthly saving.

Direct Save Telecom

Direct Save Telecom are a smaller broadband provider that resells access to the Openreach network with both superfast and full fibre plans.

Unconventionally, their superfast broadband is phone line free by default, which saves customers £2.95 on taking a phone line with pay as you go calls.

Here is their latest superfast broadband without a phone line pricing:

Direct Save Telecom offer cheap prices, but they don't appear in any of Ofcom's independent research into customer service, which makes them a bit of an unknown, however they do have good Trustpilot ratings with a Trustscore of 4.0 out of 5 from over 1,700 reviewers.

EE

EE first introduced broadband without a phone deals in August 2020, and it's now the default option for customers signing up to EE home broadband.

EE broadband deals are slightly cheaper than BT's, and it's also cheaper to add a phone line if a customer wants one, at just £2.28 for pay as you go calls, compared to BT's £5 charge.

EE pay monthly mobile customers will also receive a 10% discount on the cost of their home broadband plan, as well as some extra mobile data, which adds even more to EE's value for money.

Zen Internet

Zen Internet now offer their superfast fibre plans without a phone line as standard, and customers have the option to add a digital voice line with 1000 minutes for £6 per month.

However, as with BT above, Zen Internet pricing is often on the higher side anyway, and customers are likely to find broadband and phone plans cheaper with another provider.

For example, Plusnet's entry-level superfast fibre deal currently costs £24.99 per month, while the equivalent broadband-only version from Zen costs £32 per month.

In this instance, seeking out a broadband provider without a phone line doesn't save money.
