Finding the best TV deal with BT Sport

Which TV providers offer BT Sport?

BT Sport is available in some form from all the main pay TV providers. Typical BT Sport packs include all four channels - BT Sport 1 and 2, BT Sport ESPN and BT Sport Europe – but the price will vary depending on provider.

Those looking for a cheap deal on BT Sport should be wary of offers for BT Sport Lite, which consists of just BT Sport 1 and its corresponding interactive channel, BT Sport Extra 1. While it will give viewers access to the biggest domestic football matches BT Sport can show, it's lacking coverage of other events - like UEFA fixtures, rugby and motorsport.

What sports matches can I watch on BT Sport?

Since launch the broadcaster has been investing heavily to secure the rights for a variety of live sports and big events. BT Sport now have exclusive rights to screen live UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League matches, and this alone might make BT Sport worth it for football fans.

At present BT Sport subscribers enjoy exclusive access to 42 Barclays Premier League matches per season, as well as live coverage of matches from the Scottish Premier Football League, Italy's Serie A, Portugal's Primeira Liga, Germany's Bundesliga, the French Ligue 1, and even Australian soccer in the form of A-League fixtures.

People who aren't so keen on football will find good coverage of everything from English rugby union and tennis, through to American sports like baseball and basketball. BT Sport also has a good selection of motorsports too – from the IndyCar Series to MotoGP and the World Rally Championships.

Is BT Sport better than Sky Sports?

Whether BT Sport is better than Sky Sports is subject for debate – but the competition between them is making both raise their game. BT Sport win when it comes to European football because of the exclusive Champions League and Europa League coverage; they also have the rights to 25 live FA Cup games including the final until 2018. But their share of the Barclays Premier League is relatively meagre – they can only show about a third of the number of games that Sky Sports can.

BT Sport also has exclusive coverage of all the televised English Aviva Premiership rugby games each season, as well as the Premiership Rugby Sevens Series, but they share coverage of the European Rugby Championship Cup with Sky Sports. Fans of the other code may prefer Sky Sports, as they're the only place to see the Rugby Super League.

Cricket fans may find themselves torn in future years, as Sky Sports maintains the rights to the English legs of the Ashes, but BT Sport will be the only place to watch the Australian leg of the series – and other Australian cricket – for five years from 2017. Sky Sports is probably better for golf fans, as they can boast exclusive coverage of the Ryder Cup.

Can I get BT Sport in HD?

Most of the providers that offer BT Sport gives subscribers the chance to watch the channels in HD – the cost of upgrading varies from provider to provider. What's more, some of BT Sport's coverage is also available in Ultra HD, which is four times sharper than HD.

Getting BT Sport in HD also depends on how we're watching. Viewers watching BT Sport through a broadband-based service like Youview will probably need a fibre connection in order to add a HD pack – and the sharper BT Sport HD channels – to their deal.

Those who want the even sharper picture quality that comes with BT Sport in Ultra HD are likely to find they need a connection of at least 44Mb. People with standard fibre of up to 38Mb may be able to get the ultra sharp service if their line is "technically capable" of the faster speed. For sports fans who enjoy feeling like they're right in the middle of the action, or who want to be able to record another BT Sport channel while they're watching the Ultra HD footage, upgrading to a faster fibre deal could well be worth it.

Can I watch BT Sport online?

BT Sport is also available online and on various devices through an app, however only customers of BT, whether TV or broadband only, and those who take BT Sport through Sky can watch via the BT Sport app or online.
